Dual Language Immersion Program

Selma Unified proudly offers a Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program, an educational model where students learn literacy and academic content in Spanish and English. The DLI program promotes bilingualism, biliteracy, and academic achievement while adopting cultural awareness and a broader worldview.
Starting in kindergarten, 90% of instruction is delivered in Spanish, with English instruction gradually increasing as students progress grade levels. This immersive approach allows students to acquire language skills naturally and develop bilingual proficiency. By sixth grade, students will be able to fluently read, write, and speak in both languages. No prior knowledge of Spanish is required.
The DLI program is grounded in the three pillars of Dual Language Education:
- Bilingualism & Biliteracy
Students develop a high level of thinking, listening, speaking, reading, and writing proficiency in English and the partner language.
- High Academic Achievement
Students strive for academic excellence in all subject areas, meeting or exceeding Common Core State Standards.
- Socio-Cultural Competence
Students develop positive attitudes and appreciation toward world languages and cultures in our global society, promoting their civic involvement.
