MIGRANT EDUCATION
The Selma Unified Migrant Education Program is a federally funded program managed by the Fresno County Office of Education that addresses the unique educational and health needs of migrant children. The program aims to help migrant students achieve rigorous academic goals, ultimately ensuring they graduate high school prepared for college, career, or both.
To be eligible for the program, a child must have moved within the past three years across state or district boundaries with a parent or guardian employed—or actively seeking employment—in the agriculture, fishing, dairy, food packing, forestry, or livestock industries. Once enrolled, migrant students join regular classrooms and receive supplemental support, including after-school tutorials, educational enrichment sessions, and field trips to local colleges and universities.
Program Highlights
In addition to classroom support, the Selma Unified Migrant Education Program offers two key opportunities:
-
After-School Intervention: Available for students in grades K-12, this program offers standards-based instruction to strengthen literacy, science, and math skills at select schools.
-
Summer School: Migrant students in grades K-9 are invited to participate in summer school, where teachers use hands-on, interdisciplinary lessons focused on math, science, and language development.
How Families Can Join
The enrollment process for the Migrant Education Program begins with a Bilingual Project Specialist from the Fresno County Office of Education. The specialist identifies eligible children within Selma Unified by arranging home or office visits and interviewing families about their migration history. If a family qualifies, the parents or guardians sign a certificate of eligibility, officially enrolling the child in the program.
Parent Involvement and Resources
The Migrant Parent Advisory Council (MPAC) plays a vital role in the program. Comprised of elected migrant parent officers, the council meets six times each school year to keep parents informed about state educational guidelines and services. These meetings also feature guest speakers and community organizations that offer additional resources to support migrant families in their child’s education.
